Visual Clues That Can Help You Assess the Situation

While color isn’t a reliable identifier, texture, location, and growth pattern can give you useful information.

Texture and appearance

  • Stachybotrys tends to be slimy or wet-looking when active, and powdery or dark when dried. It grows almost exclusively on materials with high cellulose content — drywall paper, wood, ceiling tiles — that have been wet for an extended period (typically 72 hours or more).
  • Cladosporium often looks velvety or suede-like and is one of the most common molds found on window sills, bathroom caulk, and HVAC vents.
  • Aspergillus can be white, yellow, green, or black depending on the strain. It’s frequently found in air ducts and on insulation.
  • Penicillium is usually blue-green with a powdery surface and spreads quickly on water-damaged building materials.
